Joe O’Neill

Joe O’Neill Company Founder and Jeweller

Inspired by the ruins in his native home of Glendalough, Joe has been creating silver and gold Celtic jewellery for over sixty years. He first learned to make jewellery from a craftsperson who was staying in Glendalough at the time, and after discovering he had an aptitude for it, proceeded to complete an apprenticeship in Dublin. Joe then went on to found Glendalough Craft Centre, as a means to display his own work and the work of other local craftspeople and artists. After expanding the craft centre to include a range of Irish knitwear, Glendalough Craft Centre became Glendalough Woollen Mills and Joe still creates his jewellery on site in Glendalough Woollen Mills today.

Martha O’Neill

Martha O’Neill Company Director and Knitter

A knitter from a young age, Martha has been interested in woollens and crafts her whole life. Originally from America, Martha moved to Ireland during the early 90s, where she met husband Joe O’Neill and became involved in providing handknit sweaters for Glendalough Woollen Mills. More recently, Martha has become inspired by the Icelandic Lopapeysa style and has based her designs on a marriage between Aran knits, Icelandic styles, and nature inspired patterns.
