Glendalough Woollen Mills is a family business founded sixty years ago by jeweller Joe O’Neill. A native of Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, Joe began designing jewellery at an early age, and based his jewellery on the designs carved into the ruins found in Glendalough valley and the Monastic City. Searching for somewhere to display and sell his jewellery, Joe founded Glendalough Woollen Mills and began displaying the work of other local craftspeople, focusing in particular on handmade sweaters and knitwear.
Today, Joe still creates all of the jewellery for Glendalough Woollen Mills, and particularly focuses on Celtic jewellery in silver and gold. He now runs the business with his wife, Martha O’Neill. Martha is a knitwear designer and takes inspiration from the Icelandic Lopapeysa style and Irish Aran knitwear patterns. Martha sells her knitwear exclusively in Glendalough Woollen Mills.
